History

The breed is still a rare breed. The first cat was Munk, a blue male, the result of a cross between an Angora cat and a Russian Blue, living with Mrs. Schneider in Königsberg (East Prussia) in 1930/31. It was Dr. Rose Scheuer-Karpin who founded the breed. In 1951 she found a black female with wavy coat, which was called "Lämmchen" (German word for little lamb) and lived in the backyard of the hufeland hospital in Berlin-Buch. In 1957 Lämmchen was back crossed with her son Fridolin, a hybrid, she got a litter of four, where two kitten had a wavy coat. Over the years the breed almost died out, and in 1968 only three cats had been left. Some breeders tried to save the survival of the German Rex:
Family Barensfeld, cattery "vom Grund" and living in eastern Berlin outcrossed their cats with Devon Rex and other domestic cats. Family Wöllner, cattery "von Zeitz", living in western German, imported despite all problems a German Rex from famly Barensfeld in 1973, and produced the first Si-Rex in 1981.
Some well known catteries of the begin are "vom Glücksklee/Glücksanger" (family Glück), cattery "vom Jagdrain" (family Kania), cattery "von Assindia" (Mrs. Anneliese Hackmann, the founder of the WCF), cattery "vom Hause Hamann (Mr. Thomas Hamann).
In 2002 the first litter of German Rex in Finland was born.
In 2002 the German Rex Cat Club (GRXCC) was founded, whose main goal is to develop breeding strategies for the German Rex and to ensure the breed's survival.

Temperament

The German Rex is an active cat with a gentle temperament. They are like little clowns, love to play and are very loayal cats. One will be caught by their lovely character.

Grooming

German Rex need little grooming, because their coat does not shed. Brushing them from time to time will keep their coat healthy and remove dead hairs.
